Study Reveals How Much Americans Spend on Sporting Events Annually

Since early 2016, Macmichael Nwaiwu has served as the lead engineer of transmission integrity management for the Detroit, Michigan-based DTE Energy. In this role, he meets with both government and regulatory agencies in matters pertaining to TIMP compliance. In his free time, Macmichael Nwaiwu likes to attend sporting events

According to a September 2017 study, from August 2016 to August 2017, consumers paid a whopping $56 billion to attend sporting events. The study, conducted by the website creditcards.com, factored in the cost of transportation, food and drink, and ticket price.

Breaking the figures down by earnings, it is no surprise that income played a large role in determining which demographics attended sporting events. Fans who made less than $30,000 a year only made up for 26 percent of that $56 billion, while sports fans making over $75,000 a year made up 49 percent.

The study also found that older people attended less sporting events than younger sports fans. 21 percent of respondents were 53 or older while fans between the ages of 18 and 52 accounted for 43 percent.

The American Gas Association's Safety Tips for after a Hurricane

With several years of experience in the energy industry, Macmichael Nwaiwu serves as a lead engineer at DTE Energy in Detroit. Due to the nature of his work, Macmichael Nwaiwu is a member of the American Gas Association (AGA).

The AGA was founded in 1918 and has grown to represent more than 200 clean natural gas energy companies throughout the United States. Dedicated to customer safety, the AGA’s website offers tips for those affected by hurricanes.

AGA’s first tip is to be aware of how natural gas smells. Natural gas is artificially odorized to give it the offensive smell of rotten eggs, which makes it easier to detect. If you smell rotten eggs, the AGA recommends leaving the house immediately before calling your utility company or 911.

After a disaster, you may need to move and relocate appliances. The AGA warns against doing this alone, suggesting you call a licensed professional or your utility company to help you handle appliances safely.

The AGA’s website offers more tips for those affected by hurricanes. Visit www.aga.org.

PMHSA’s Pipeline Enforcement

Macmichael Nwaiwu is a certified Project Management Professional with over seven years of experience in the petroleum and natural gas industry. As a senior engineer for DTE Energy in Detroit, Macmichael Nwaiwu manages the gas transmission pipeline integrity program and ensures compliance with federal regulations from the Department of Transportation and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).

A federal agency, PHMSA is responsible for mitigating the safety risks associated with hazardous material transportation. The agency operates as a part of the Department of Transportation, and was created in 2004 by the Norman Y. Mineta Research and Special Programs Improvement Act.

To accomplish its goal, PHMSA operates two divisions. The office of Hazardous Materials is designed to regulate hazardous material transportation, while the Office of Pipeline Safety focuses on pipeline transportation systems.

Regulation of pipeline transportation is accomplished primarily through the Pipeline Safety Enforcement Program, which ensures all relevant regulations and standards are met. The program, which is responsible for over 2.6 million miles of pipelines, leverages onsite inspections, incident reporting, enforcement activities, outreach and engagement, and other efforts to ensure the safe operation of transportation facilities.

The Society of Petroleum Engineers’ Competency Management Tool

Macmichael Nwaiwu is a graduate of the University of Houston who currently serves as a senior engineer at DTE Energy. In addition to his professional work, Macmichael Nwaiwu is involved with the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Organized in 1957, the Society of Petroleum Engineers is a professional membership organization that represents the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry. The society, which was originally a constituent of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, has grown since its founding to include more than 164,000 members from 143 countries.

Members of the society benefit from a variety of programs that provide technical knowledge and educational resources relevant to the oil and gas industry. One such initiative is the Competency Management Tool, a web-based self-assessment that evaluates industry specific knowledge. The tool evaluates technical and soft skills in areas that range from geosciences and engineering to business administration and logistics. Moreover, the tool connects members to career prospects. Additional information on the tool can be found at www.spe.org/training/cmt/.

Natural Gas - Composition and Origins

Leveraging skill-sets tailored to oil and gas infrastructure management, Macmichael Nwaiwu designs and implements projects to benefit DTE Energy’s gas transmission pipeline in the Detroit area. As lead engineer of transmission integrity management, Macmichael Nwaiwu carries out his responsibilities with the aid of a team comprising four other engineers and several data analysts.

Natural gas has no smell or taste, and is invisible to the naked eye. People can detect natural gas odor only because mercaptan, a chemical humans experience as a foul smell, is added for safety purposes.

The chemical composition of natural gas is dominated by methane, which comprises roughly 90 percent of it. The remaining 10 percent or so is taken up by traces of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, ethane, and other gases. Natural gas originates underground in deposits of hydrocarbons. One theory goes that the deposits formed as a result of prehistoric sea life that ultimately created an energy-rich sediment.

In any event, it’s from these deposits that extraction firms source raw natural gas, which is distributed throughout the United States via millions of miles of pipeline.

AGA’s Your Energy Campaign Teaches Americans about Natural Gas’ Impact

A successful petroleum and natural gas engineer, Macmichael Nwaiwu divides his time between serving as the executive chairman at Global Dynamic Integrity Solutions Ltd. and senior natural gas engineer for DTE Energy Company. With more than seven years of field experience, Macmichael Nwaiwu belongs to such professional organizations as the American Gas Association (AGA).

A trade organization serving the natural gas industry, AGA recently launched an education campaign known as Your Energy. This initiative was created to teach people living in the United States about the many ways natural gas affects their lives. By raising awareness of natural gas’ critical role in everyday life, AGA hopes to challenge the belief that keeping natural resources in the ground is the only way to improve the climate.

Through Your Energy, the organization will bring consumers’ attention to a range of information. According to the campaign, natural gas continues to be a major component in reducing carbon emissions in the U.S. and serves as a safe and an affordable fuel for cooking meals and warming homes. Further, natural gas energy is reliable and environmentally friendly, thanks to its partnerships with hydropower, wind, and solar energy producers.

The organization plans on spreading this information and more through social media engagement, advertising, and community outreach efforts. Your Energy will also provide consumers and policymakers with resources regarding the positive impact of natural gas.
